Events of the day.

  • Made toast and Raisin Bran for breakfast.
  • Watched disc one of Season 9 of Seinfeld.
  • Moved some boxes of stuff that doesn't fit in my new room to the basement.
  • Talked to insurance guy about accident. He sets up an appointment for me to get my car looked at.
  • Curl my hair for about an hour.
  • Go to car appointment. Car guy is really cool, we talk about beer and nude models. Tells me the car costs $800 to fix and then tells me how to get it fixed for $200. Legit.
  • Made a FUCKING GREAT pizza!
If I had to calculate how much time all that took in real life, I'd say about an hour and half. But I've been doing that shit since 10 am!

And it's only seven o'clock!

Just to bring you up to speed, here's what has already occured while uemployed :
  • Moved to Olympia. I live with three other people. A couple, and a single guy, and a cat. The cat is really cool.
  • Finished Season 7 & 8 of Seinfeld.
  • Currently working on Season 9. (Every few months, I watch the whole series, this was the endpoint of a viewing I started in my old apartment.)
  • Got in a car accident in Lacey where no one was hurt, but it was really a nuisance.
  • Worked! At a bar for about 4 hours last week. They just called me because someone called in. I think they're going to do that whenever they need me. I'm not completely jobless.
  • Carved a pumpkin.
  • Applied for unemployment based on a friend's advice. I still haven't figured how this works, but I'm excited.
  • Missed my friends.
  • Lots of sleeping until noon.
  • Bought a pillowcase.
  • Stole groceries from my parent's house.
  • Decorated for Halloween. The roommates were kind of weird about it. The cat was into it. I said she was cool.
  • Stared at stuff.
  • Washed dishes.
  • Cleaned out the refrigerator.
  • Chased squirrels in the yard.
  • Walked to the store to buy beer.

Welcome.

So, as you may have already read, I got laid off from my a job that  I really loved. Naturally my first instinct was to find a new minimum wage bartending/waiting thing to do. And I tried! For a long time. At least two weeks. I've never been without a job before, and when I was employed I usually worked a lot. So for about a week I freaked the fuck out. Got bored, didn't know how to deal with spare time, watched cable television. And then that second week went by and still no job. I started to get comfortable with the idea of waking up with no purpose. I have seen friends of mine be very successful with this premise, but never thought I'd be one of them. I'm still kind of freaked out when there is little more than "make bowl of cereal" and "finish season 8" on my to-do list. And this happens like everyday!
It wasn't until earlier today that I completely gave up on reality and decided to embrace my situation. I've worked hard and dealt with asshole customers for years now! I never had a vacation without the thought of the return to work looming over my head. I'll (hopefully) never be in this situation again, so I should celebrate it while I can.

The title of this journal is a reference to Seinfeld's, "The Summer of George."
I hope my season turns out better than his.

I will hopefully update this journal daily with what events occupied my waking hours whilst unemployed.
